Teaching at the weekend school: what I learned

I signed up to teach fractions. Six months later my students at the weekend school are teaching me new ways to explain them.

Start with chapatis

Abstract fractions sat badly with this batch until one Sunday when Anita ji cut a paper chapatis into quarters and asked who got the bigger share. The room changed in a minute.

Homework that fits the week

Most students help at home every evening. We now set three problems instead of twenty, and completion jumped from a third to almost the full class.

If you can give two Saturday mornings, the school will happily take anyone who can add properly and explain patiently.
